Why do you need to use high quality joss powder to make incense sticks (agarbatti)?
As you know joss powder is ground from some parts of the litsea tree. To make highest quality which we called “zin” quality, people have to use the barks only. Because the barks give you the strongest viscosity. Price will be high but it saves you lots of cost.
1. You will put less joss powder in your mixing formula. Let me take one example:
Zin quality is about 1080 usd/ton. In 10 kgs of charcoal and saw dust powder, you put 1 kg of Zin joss powder. So your cost is 1.08 usd.
Second quality is about 1030 usd/ton. In 10 kgs of charcoal and saw dust powder, you have to put 1.3 kg of joss powder. So your cost is 1.34 usd. So you have to pay 1.34 usd – 1.08 usd = 0.26 usd higher. One day you finish 1 ton of powder, then you waste 26 usd. One month you will waste 26 usd x 30 usd = 780 usd. Your profit is gone with the wind!

How do people make second quality joss powder?
To make the price less, people will mix barks and leaves together to grind. Leaves are cheaper but the viscosity is not high. Now they are ready to give you lower quality. In some factories, because customers always want cheap and cheap, so they will mix saw dust into it. The viscosity is very low and if you keep just one month in your warehouse, the viscosity will be down clearly.
